A wooden phinisi hull taking shape on a beach behind palm trees

Phinisi Armada

An ongoing hero film, photography and social media campaign, documenting the build of a traditional phinisi vessel from start to finish.

Bulukumba, South Sulawesi, Indonesia

The campaign also follows the vessel's attempted journey to become the first phinisi to return to Australian shores in 100+ years.

Phinisi are built where they will be launched: on an open beach, under palms, with hand tools and a crew that knows the hull by heart. The gallery moves between drone views of the whole yard and close portraits of the men who work in it.

The first step is a day on site.
