A shaper sanding a white surfboard in a blue-walled bay

Flanagan Surfboards

A photography collection and bio for world renowned surfboard shaper Jason Flanagan.

Bali, Indonesia

Flanagan Surfboards are made by hand in a small room, with sanding blocks, tape and a lot of patience. We spent the day there with the shaper as he worked on a single board.

The set stays close: hands on the rail, tape pulled off the nose, a signature in pencil on the blank. The last frame stands in the doorway, with racks of boards waiting behind him.

The first step is a day on site.
